What Are You Thankful For?

As we begin to close the monumental year of 2020, there have been many times in my mind, the overwhelming nature of the pandemic has messed with my head. I used to love reading good news stories. By that I mean well researched, well written stories of substance. When a writer gets into a groove, I can become mesmerized with the way words flow on paper or a screen. Unfortunately, with much of the news being about our Covid-19 Pandemic, I have retreated from reading much news these days. It has honestly caused a bit of a void in my being.
Alas- things are harder. In my State, restaurants, gyms, theaters and other places where one can retreat for a bit of a reprieve on the grind of everyday life have once again shut down as the Covid numbers increase at a rapid pace. I do not wish to beleaguer these statements however as I am quite certain most people are feeling similar to myself.
What now? Where do I focus my thoughts and energy? I was hit between the eyes on this notion that I have become all too entrenched in the negatives of what is happening in the world today and decided it is time to turn 180 degrees with my thoughts and attitudes. As the aroma of yesterday's Thanksgiving meal still lingers through the house, I am reminded of a quiet day full of a small gathering and lots of food. Nope, we did not squander or hold back as left overs are one of the favorites of our small group. I am thankful for our continued health during this holiday time as well as our jobs. We do have secure work and an income where others are struggling. I am thankful for my family and will always take the stance that the importance of each of those people in my life, whether here or not is one of the most valuable items of for me. I am very thankful for my wife, who is also an educator. She has stood by me through the good and bad times and I revel in confidence that will continue. We work hard together and team well. Of course, we have our differences but that also makes life a bit more interesting.
I am thankful for my friends who have also stood by me throughout my life. I do miss the human contact I have grown accustomed to but also know the pandemic will not last forever and we will have "normalcy" once again some day. I must also include my dog in the friend category. She, to the core of her being is "mans best friend." Each day, she makes me laugh with something silly she does.
As we head deeper into late fall and early winter, I also would like to challenge each of you to dig deep and consider blessings and what you are thankful for. This will pass at some point and we will be interacting as we did before Covid-19 existed. On second thought, perhaps we will interact in a more positive, thoughtful nature as we ponder the difference between pre and post pandemic. Maybe a bit more on the side of appreciation will be in order for each of us. I plan on being in tune with that.
Stay safe, stay healthy and be Thankful!
Until next time,
Jon
